It hasn’t taken Ruby long to settle in as part of the team. Both Charlotte (3) and Alexander (1) (with a bit of help from Tom), have made her feel right at home. So to celebrate we thought some cute pics were the order of the day!

Adelaide Hills Pastured Eggs is one of 3 SA egg producers with less than 100 hens per Ha. This is a long way short of the allowed 10,000 hens per Ha. Most if not all small producers are lobbying for a new gold standard so that our eggs are sold with a point of difference rather than “crammed in like sardines” free range egg producers with stocking densities closer to 10,000. I personally think 10,000 would be like living your entire life at a rock concert, noisy and over crowded. At significantly lower stocking rates (we are at 30 hens per Ha) the hens have the freedom to express themselves as nature intended, they can dust bathe, scratch and search to seeds, bugs and green grass. Our hens live permanently on pasture and so we think the new gold standard should be “Pastured” eggs. We are very proud to announce a new member to the Adelaide Hills Pastured Egg Family, her name is Ruby, and to say Tom is happy is an understatement. Ruby is a 2yo Maremma from Maremma Rescue Victoria, who needed to be re homed and hasn’t she fitted straight in with Tom. Love is definitely in the air and its pleasing to see both dogs working together. Ruby hasn’t been housed with so many hens before and she’ll need to work out if she doesn’t eat fast enough then the girls will clean her bowl faster than you can say Jack Rabbit! But she’s a natural with hens and under Tom’s guidance we’re convinced she’ll make a wonderful guardian for our chickens. You can tell from the photo’s that Tom’s a wee bit excited with his new “friend.”
Now Tom reckons he’s dragged in more likes because of his gorgeous looks and adorable nature but we cant let him take all the credit, the eggs themselves are amazing. We’ve been “blown away” by the response and feedback in the last couple of months, we literally sell out of eggs every week. The Good news is we are in the process of ordering more chickens and a movable caravan for them so we can offer more eggs to more customers who are on the waiting list. It appears the consumer lucks out again when they go and buy Free Range eggs after the decision to make 10,000 hens per hectare the new standard for Free Range Eggs. RSPCA on their website have questioned the meaning of ‘meaningful and regular access’.
Consumers will be paying an increased price for something that is effectively a barn or caged egg. Here at Adelaide Hills Pastured Eggs we are submitting a proposal to create a new category of eggs. Pastured eggs should become the new gold standard for premium quality eggs. We feel restricted as legislation makes us use the term “free range” on our cartons and after the recent decision we want nothing but to distance ourselves as far from free rnage as possible as the term has now been “bastardized.” Consumers need a “meaningful” choice so they can make an informed decision as to the quality of the eggs they are buying. What the new legislation has achieved is brought the term free range eggs down to the level of caged and barn laid quality. Egg producers can use the term free range whether a hen physically goes outside the barn or not.
Moving forward consumers need a choice that distinguishes a premium egg product from the rest. That distinction should be pastured eggs. Our hens are never locked up, they have 24 hours a day access to pasture as soon as they leave the perch. Its because they live on the pasture in a mobile hen house, protected by Tom our livestock guardian dog and they have 100% freedom of movement, 100% access to outdoors and 100% ability to live as chickens should, roaming and foraging on bio diverse pastures everyday. The benefits to the consumer is that our hens are moved onto new regenerated pasture every other day, nutrient rich and bio diverse, with all that goodness ending up in exquisite tasting eggs. Eggs are in the news this week with speculation as to what is and what isn’t a “free range egg”. Seems the dispute is over how many hens can be confined into a specific sized area. Free Range could mean 1500 hens per Hectare or as many as 10,000 hens per hectare. Here at Adelaide Hills Pastured Eggs we have approximately 30 hens per hectare, that’s right 30. So our “stocking rate is by “free range” standards, ridiculously low. We don’t consider stocking rate to be relevant but rather its the ability of our chickens to be able to move to new pasture and allow the area they were on to regenerate. This is truly sustainable and makes for good practical farming. Our hens thrive on new bio diverse pastures and produce exquisite tasting eggs. Hence the reason we use the term “pastured” so you know our eggs come from a truly sustainable system. Unfortunately we have to by law have the words “free range” on our egg cartons but with the way the term is used we’d prefer to use the term pastured. So if you are looking for exquisite tasting eggs then perhaps try ours, once you have had an Adelaide Hills Pastured Egg, there is no going back! Its simply nutrition by nature.

We have been getting loads of requests as to where you can buy our eggs from because some customers cant get to the Farmers Market on a Saturday. We approached Angelo at the Hahndorf Fruit & veg and he was excited to start stocking Adelaide Hills Pastured Eggs. His reasoning was that he did not have any other type of “pastured eggs” on sale and realised that we produced something exquisite and unique. (And did we mention LOCAL and SA owned and operated?). He was suitably impressed that we as producers took the time to test our pastures for the nutrient content and that our eggs were produced in a sustainable and bio diverse manner.
